Description
Johannes Brahms
Autograph letter signed ("J Brahms") to Philipp Spitta in Sondershausen
stating that he wishes in the meantime to report the arrival of his items and to express his thanks, noting that he hopes to be able to say more soon
...Ich möchte doch einstweilen d. Ankunft Ihrer Sachen anzeigen u. mit einem Wort meinen besten Dank!...
1 page, oblong 8vo (8.5 x 12cm), on a correspondence card, autograph address panel, postmarked Vienna, [1866-1874?]
The great Bach scholar Philipp Spitta had begun his lifelong close friendship with Brahms during his time at the University of Göttingen in the early 1860s. Addressed to Spitta at Sondershausen, the present letter of Brahms presumably dates from Spitta's time at the Gymnasium there teaching Latin and Greek (1866-1874).
Formerly in the collection of the Berlin pianist and teacher Ernst Rudorff (1840-1916).
