Born in Varanasi in 1921, Biswanath Mukerji left home aged just 17 to pursue his artistic ambitions. He studied at the Lucknow School of Art under Bengal School artist Asit Kumar Haldar. Mukerji is best known for his landscapes, and the current paintings depict two idyllic mountainscapes. The mountains are deftly rendered and reminiscent of the work of J.P. Gangooly, and yet the foregrounds, with banks of lush grass and foliage, lit by shafts of warm light, display a charming romanticism. Mukerji was reclusive throughout his life and these secluded mountain scenes beautifully echo the artist's withdrawn nature.
