Kisory Roy trained under one of the stalwarts of academic painting, J. P. Gangooly, and he maintained this visual style throughout his career. Known for depicting the landscapes of West Bengal's countryside, the current lot is an charming depiction of the pastoral environs of the Copper Refinery at Ghatsila, Jharkhand. Although painted with enough detail to place this work in the category of realism, it is rendered with a delicate softness of line and subtly impressionist brushwork. Billowing plumes of smoke pour from the refinery’s towers and fill the blue sky. In contrast to this image of industrial activity, the foreground reveals an idyllic and verdant stretch of countryside. The vista is suffused with warm sunshine, signaling the legacy of Gangooly, a painter known for his mastery of light.
