La Tour Eiffel

signed Van Dongen (lower left); signed Kees van Dongen and titled on the stretcher

oil on canvas

46 by 55cm., 18⅛ by 21⅝in.

Framed: 65.5 by 74.5cm., 25¾ by 29⅜in.

Painted in 1904.

This work will be included in the forthcoming van Dongen Digital Catalogue Raisonné, currently being prepared under the sponsorship of the Wildenstein Plattner Institute, Inc.

The canvas is not lined. Inspection under UV light reveals a small spot of retouching to the centre of the extreme right edge, a small spot to the centre of the Eiffel Tower, and two small spots to the extreme upper edge, one of which relates to a pin-sized hole. There are some fine lines of craquelure in places, some of which correspond to the vertical stretcher-bar. There is a small fleck of paint loss to the sky in the upper left corner. There is some minor frame abrasion in places along the extreme edges. This work is in overall good condition.
