Max Liebermann

1847 - 1935

Allee im Tiergarten mit Spaziergängern und Kutsche (Avenue in Tiergarten with Pedestrians and a Carriage)

signed M. Liebermann (lower left)

oil on panel

37.3 by 45.8cm., 14¾ by 18in.

Framed: 56.5 by 65cm., 22¼ by 25⅝in.

Painted circa 1922.

The panel is stable but there are two horizontal cracks to the right edge (approx. 3cm in length). Inspection under UV light does not reveal any sign of retouching. There are a few losses to the pigment in places including two to towards the centre of the upper edge, one towards the upper right edge and one towards the lower left edge. There are a few further tiny nicks and handling marks to the extreme edges and a few accretions in places. There are some lines of craquelure and paint shrinkage to the thicker yellow areas of pigment. There is a lovely impasto to the greenery of the trees. This work is in overall very good condition.
