Le dessinateur

signed h. Daumier (upper right) and h.D. (lower right)

oil on panel

14.3 by 13.2cm., 5⅝ by 5¼in.

Framed: 26.5 by 25.4cm., 10⅜ by 10in.

Painted circa 1852-55.

The panel is sound. There is a milky varnish through which UV light cannot fully penetrate, however UV light inspection reveals some areas of retouching to the extreme right edge of the panel and a few fine lines of retouching towards the left edge of the panel. There is a line of retouching to the centre of the lower edge (approx. 2cm) and some further small spots of retouching in places corresponding to faint lines of paint shrinkage and lines inherent to the panel. There is some abrasion to the extreme edges including a minor loss to the extreme upper left corner and one to the centre of the extreme right edge. This work is in overall good condition.
