Description
Adam Pynacker
Schiedam near Rotterdam 1620 (?) - 1673 Amsterdam
Landscape with travelers on a rural path, others resting behind
Black chalk and gray wash;
signed with the artist's monogram and dated, lower right: AP. 1663
495 by 430 mm; 19½ by 16⅞ in.
The present work, signed by the artist with his distinctive monogram, can be compared on stylistic grounds to a sheet in the Teylers Museum, Haarlem, depicting a Mountain Landscape with Figures on a Wooden Bridge.1 As Michiel Plomp noted in his catalogue entry for the Teylers drawing, other sheets of similar technique and size, also dated 1663, are in Leiden and Amsterdam, the first signed in full, the other with Pynacker's monogram.2 All four of these sheets share a serene, classical grandeur, but as Plomp points out, this is in contrast to the artist's paintings of the early 1660s, which are much more mannerist in style.
Although another very comparable drawing was sold in these Rooms only a year ago, substantial drawings like this by Adam Pynacker are extremely rare on the market.3
