A male figure seen from behind, carrying a staff or fishing rod
Pen and brown ink and wash over traces of black chalk
197 by 119 mm; 7¾ by 4¾ in
This lively drawing was traditionally attributed to the Neapolitan artist Salvator Rosa due, in part, to the energetic handling of the pen and abundant use of brown wash, as well as the subject matter, that of a shepherd or fisherman with his back turned to the viewer, all of which are hallmarks of Rosa's graphic style.
Upon closer inspection it seems more likely that the drawing is French and seems to have been executed by an artist active in the Duchy of Lorraine, under the influence of artists such as Jacques Callot (1592-1635) and Jacques Bellange (1575-1616).
