The vanitas motif of the skull against a dark background is inspired by works such as Champaigne's painting currently at the Musée de Tesse in Le Mans.1 Depicting the same skull from two angles is an unusual technique that may have been intended as a reference to head studies done from life, though here the implication is much more somber.
