While Paul Dorival was known to contemporaries for his religious scenes, he has since become more closely associated with still lifes. Many of his works feature baskets of fruit and birds, as exemplified by the present panel which depicts two birds in front of a straw basket overflowing with peaches and plums. The pendant to this painting, which includes a basket of plums, cherries, and other fruits, was sold in these rooms on 30 January 2021 (lot 638) for $60,480.
