The Flagellation of Christ

oil on canvas

canvas: 36½ by 26¾ in.; 92 by 68 cm.

framed: 44½ by 35¼ in.; 113 by 89.5 cm.

Jacopo Bassano was one of the most important and original painters working in Venice in the sixteenth century, and at its best, his work places him alongside his great contemporaries such as Titian, Veronese and Tintoretto. This canvas is a mature work, painted in the mid-1570s, and very possibly a collaborative work with his son Francesco, who by this point in his career was the artist's principal workshop collaborator. Francesco took over the family workshop in 1539.
