Portrait of Alexander Stroganov (1795-1891), bust-length, in a red jacket with a blue sash and military decorations

oil on canvas

canvas: 21¾ by 18 in.; 55.2 by 45.7 cm.

framed: 27¾ by 24 in.; 70.5 by 61 cm.

The canvas has an old glue relining and is stable under a clear, glossy varnish. The colors remain vivid and the details on the costume include areas of impasto. Under ultraviolet light there are scattered, subtle restorations which flouresce, mostly in the background and along the edges, but some in the face, particularly in the sitter's left cheek. These are all very well done and not noticeable to the naked eye. The costume remains largely untouched. Overall the painting presents well and is offered in a carved giltwood frame.
