Head of a horse

signed and indistinctly dated lower left: J. Volmar ...

oil on canvas

canvas: 32 by 25½ in.; 81.3 by 64.8 cm.

framed: 40¾ by 34¼ in.; 103.5 by 87 cm.

The canvas appears to be strip-lined or unlined and is stable and taut on its stretcher. The image reads very well beneath clear varnish with modeling and shading retained. The signature at lower left has been abraded but is nearly legible. No retouching or repairs are noticeable to the naked eye. Under UV inspection, 2 repaired tears are visible: one rectangular tear at upper left, and a diagonal tear about 6 inches long at lower left. Scattered retouching is visible such as strokes along the bottom left, a spot at bottom center near the horse’s chest, around the horse’s eyelid, and a few other scattered spots. The painting has been restored well and can hang in its present state. Offered in a decoratively carved giltwood frame.

Little is known about the career of Johann Georg Volmar, who worked in Germany, Switzerland, and seems to have made a trip to Rome in the early nineteenth century. The present horse's head relates to other paintings of full-length horses signed by Volmar
