Jacques van der Wijen was active in his hometown of Amsterdam from about 1604 until at least the middle of the seventeenth century.  Born to Flemish parents, Van der Wijen likely trained as a young man in the Amsterdam workshop of Gillis van Coninxloo II, under whom he would have been exposed to the tradition of landscape painting, which would become his specialty throughout his career.

We are grateful to Jan de Maere for suggesting an attribution to Jacques van der Wijen on the basis of digital photographs.
