This handsome head of a young man bears a striking resemblance with certain figures who appear in several genre scenes by the French eighteenth-century painter Louis Rolland Trinquesse. The closest parallels include the man seated at left in Interior with a lady, her maid, and a gentleman, 1776 (Hartford, Wadsworth Atheneum, inv. no. 2006.20.1) and the man listening at right in The Music Performance, 1774 (Munich, Alte Pinakothek, inv. no. HUW 37).
