Portrait of Maria Theresa of Austria (1638 - 1683), Queen Consort of France

oil on panel, in a painted oval

panel: 11¾ by 9⅛ in.; 29.8 by 23.2 cm.

framed: 16½ by 13½ in.; 41.9 by 34.3 cm.

The panel cosists of a single plank that is flat, stable, and beveled on all 4 sides of the reverse. The image reads well with impasto retained beneath varnish that has become dirty, slightly visible in the skin tones. No retouching or repairs are obvious to the naked eye. Under UV inspection, the varnish fluoresces unevenly and impedes further inspection of any prior retouching. The painting would likely brighten with a clean and fresh varnish but it can also hang in its present state. Offered in a thick, decoratively carved giltwood frame.

Maria Theresa was by birth both Infanta of Spain and Portugal and Archduchess of Austria, and became Queen of France and Navarre upon her 1660 marriage to Louis XIV. The fashionable hairstyle in the present portrait appears in the many portraits of Maria Theresa made by Jean Nocret, Charles Beaubrun, and French artists in their circles.
