Dogs hunting a heron

signed lower left on the rock ledge: Abraham Hondius

oil on panel

panel: 11 by 13 ½ in.; 28 by 34.3 cm.

framed: 18½ by 21 in.; 47 by 53.3 cm.

The panel consists of a single plank that is flat, stable and beveled on all 4 edges of the reverse. The image reads very well beneath the varnish. A small spot of loss on the ruin at center right is visible but not distracting. No other repairs are visible to the naked eye. Under UV inspection, the varnish is thick and difficult to read through, but old horizontal lines of restoration are faintly visible in the sky as well as retouching to address frame abrasion at the top edge. The painting can hang in its current state. Offered in a dark wood frame with faux tortoiseshell inner liner and canvas liner and nameplate.
