Portrait of a Spanish noblewoman

oil on panel

panel: 9⅛ by 7⅝ in.; 23.2 by 19.4 cm.

framed: 13⅝ by 12¼ in.; 34.6 by 31.1 cm.

This dignified portrait of a Spanish lady was likely painted in the Netherlands in the late 1570s or early 1580s. The fashionably dressed sitter was married, as indicated by her elaborate gold coif. The artist, perhaps a member of the workshops of Anthonis Mor or Frans Pourbus the Elder, likely worked in Antwerp or Brussels, cosmopolitan centers of art and commerce at the time.
