Gerard Hoet received his initial training in the northern Netherlands from his father, who was a glass painter. Following periods in the Hague, Paris, and Brussels, Hoet settled in Utrecht, where he co-founded a drawing academy in 1697. Hoet worked in an elegant, classicizing style, often employing erudite iconography that would have appealed to his educated patrons.
