Carolyn Leder, Stanley Spencer: The Astor Collection, Thomas Gibson Publishing Ltd., London, 1976, no. 81, illustrated p. 74

Drawn some years after their divorce, this depicts Stanley Spencer and his first wife Hilda (the artist Hilda Carline), dancing in the cottage Chapel View, Burghclere. She wears a dress and high heels, her hair in a bun as usual, while he is dressed informally in socks and pyjamas, and sports his lifelong fringe. On the left is a stove, familiar from other drawings.

The Spencers lived at Chapel View while he painted his outstanding murals in the Sandham Memorial Chapel (now National Trust). The pictures commemorate the First World War. With notable generosity his patrons, Mary and Louis Behrend, built the chapel and the cottage, and financed the artist while he worked on the project.
