The present work is a characteristic self-portrait by William Orpen, accentuating his unconventional looks with self-depreciating humour. Here he looks unamused in waiting for Mossie (Orpen's brother, Arthur Herbert Stack Orpen). It was apparently not an uncommon habit, with Orpen depicting an emaciated self in another sketch titled, How to Grow Thin - Waiting for Mossie (National Gallery of Ireland, Dublin).
