The Artist

L'artiste

The Glen takes inspiration from a woodland area in Co. Wicklow, called ‘The Devils Glen’, regularly visited by Maser during recent lockdowns.

Hiking and walking the forests and glens of Ireland offer a sense of clarity and calmness to Maser. Woodlands provide much inspiration for his creative practice, and help to slow down the pace of urban life. In this area, there is a popular trail called the ‘Seamus Heaney walk’. A waterfall marks the end of the trail, which Maser has gesturally captured in the present work.

Maser’s work and that of Seamus Heaney have run parallels on many occasions, coexisting together in various spaces. Heaney’s final words served as inspiration for one of Maser’s murals in the heart of Dublin city ‘Don’t Be Afraid’ which provided hope to the local community. The National Library commissioned Maser to create an original piece for their commemorative exhibition at the Seamus Heaney Museum, and he has met Heaney’s family on a number of occasions.

Maser was invited to the Centre Culturel Irlandais in Paris to undertake a week long art residency in October 2021. While in Paris, Maser was commissioned by the Irish Embassy to paint a mural in Cherbourg. This hand painted mural was launched on St Patrick’s Day 2022 to celebrate the community and the connections between Ireland and France.

---------------------------------
