With characteristic wit and sophistication, Dorothy Cross transforms a pair of footballs - now beyond past glories, deflated and anchored in bronze. Yet emerging from each ball is a cast of the artist's hand, index finger extending upwards in a familiar celebratory gesture, invoking a spirit of optimism and aspiration. Re-appropriating obsolete or found objects to explore such ideas as the passage of time, wasted opportunities or unfulfilled potential, is a common strand within her work.
Dorothy Cross is one of Ireland's leading contemporary artists - a multimedia artist who came to prominence in the 1980s dealing with themes of identity, gender and sexuality. While these are often shaped by both her personal narrative and Ireland's particular socio-political situation, her work, as she asserts, extends beyond national boundaries.
She has exhibited internationally and is held in collections across Ireland, the UK and the USA, including the Irish Museum of Modern Art, Dublin; Tate Gallery, London and the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. A major retrospective publication, 'Dorothy Cross, Crossing', spanning 35 years of her work was published in 2022 by Dürer Editions.
