Patek Philippe initially launched reference 5980 in 2006 at the Baselworld fair during the 30th anniversary of the celebrated reference 3700. It was the first Nautilus to incorporate a chronograph complication. To simplify the layout of the dial, Patek chose to combine all of the chronograph functions into one co-axial subdial for elapsed minutes and hours, similar to the annual calendar ref. 5960 that is equipped with same caliber, an innovative and unusual time display for the brand.

Originally produced in stainless steel with black-blue dial, the firm expanded on the design in 2010 by transitioning the dial color to a grey-blue color and also offering the reference in pink gold. Patek further developed the range of the reference by introducing the 5980/1AR at Baselworld in 2013, combining the traditional steel case with rose gold elements on the bezel, pushers and bracelet center links. This steel and rose gold combination is complemented by the dial, a stunningly graduated blue with applied rose gold markers.
