THE ELDERLY EXILED METTERNICH REFLECTS ON THE LIBERAL REVOLUTIONS THAT HAVE RESULTED IN HIS EXILE. In this letter he touches on subjects including the status of the Frankfurt Assembly, the revolutions

in Vienna and Hungary, the prominent role of Jews in leading the revolutions, and the recent history of revolutionary activity in Poland ("...Partout où une révolution se fait jour, des Polonais se trouvent dans les

rangs des entrepreneurs et des conducteurs..."). Travers Twiss, Drummond Professor of Political Economy at Oxford, was one of many writers and politicians who sought out Metternich during his exile in England

from 1848-51. Twiss's correspondence with Metternich features in his book Hungary: its Constitution and its Catastrophe (1850).
