MINIATURE OF WU-TANG CLAN ICE CREAM TRUCK SHOUTS OUT SHAOLIN AND 90S HIP HOP
Brooklyn-based artist Danny Cortes creates intricate miniatures of iconic New York City places and objects that speak to a loving nostalgia for the artist's own childhood haunts and the early 1990s. What began as a creative hobby during the COVID-19 pandemic soon became a way to share the vanishing version of his beloved city with a wider audience thanks to social media. His miniatures include mailboxes, lampposts, handball courts, storefronts, and as represented in the current lot, the iconic Mister Softee ice cream truck reimagined with the branding of legendary Hip Hop supergroup, the Wu-Tang Clan..
In favor of creating a 'new jingle for a new era,' the ice cream company Good Humor reached out to Wu-Tang Clan member and producer, RZA, to compose a new jingle for free distribution among truck drivers and industry-standard vehicles, which can be streamed on their website. The current lot pays homage to not only Wu-Tang's popularity and influence in urban communities, but the group's undeniable ability to flip the script and breathe shocking and necessary new life into dated social norms long overdue for change.
