Description

Property of a Lady

An Irish George III mahogany serving table, possibly Dublin or Co. Offaly, circa 1760

the moulded top above a complex pierced fretwork frieze and spandrels on channelled legs, the underside with pencil inscription listing owners by descent

87cm. high, 185.5cm. wide, 78.5cm. deep; 2ft. 10¼in., 6ft. 1in., 2ft. 7in.

Probably commissioned by Peter MacCarthy for Hill House, Clonakilty, County Cork, in circa 1760;
thence by descent.
For comparison see a table at Birr Castle, Co. Offaly. The Birr table was probably commissioned by Sir William Parsons 4th Bt. (1731-91). It was formerly fitted with angle brackets and was ensuite with at least one other. According to the vendor of the present table there was a further that matched originally. See James Peill and the Knight of Glin, Irish Furniture, Yale University Press, 2007, p. 234, no. 122.
