The Roadster collection was launched in 2001 and was part of the Cartier catalogue for only 10 years.

The model took its inspiration from the mid-century cars, especially the Porsche 356, with rounded curves and the four screws reminding the car's headlights. The magnifying glass for the date is an evocation of the intake opening on the hood, while the crown is reminiscent of the cooling fins. The dial remind a speedometer with the hash marks and the concentric circles underneath the traditional concentric Roman numerals.

The Roadster also stayed faithful to the roots of the brand with the tonneau-shape case, reminding the celebrated Tortue.

Cartier conceived it as their sport model and mainly produced it in stainless steel.

On some pieces like this lot, Cartier fitted luminescent hands to re-enforce the sport spirit of the watch.

The Roadster further was the first Cartier with the quick release bracelet function.

The combination of the stainless steel case and bracelet, magnifying glass and luminescent hands, makes this piece a very attractive sport watch.

This example further comes with an impressive set of additional quick release straps and deployante buckles, making this lot even more desirable.
