This rare airplane flyback military bakelite clock with chronograph testifies of one of the most famous military collaborations in the watchmaking history. The Rome based retailer A. Cairelli was suppliers to the Italian Air Force during the mid 20th century. They provided some notorious chronograph wristwatches, including the oversized Universal Geneve split-second chronograph as well as the CP-2, standing for Cronometro da Polsa Type 2, first manufactured by Universal Genève and then by Zenith.

Renowned for their exceptional chronograph movements, Universal also sold through Cairelli some dashboard clocks to the Italian army. The large black dial has oversized luminescent 3, 6, 9 and 12 indexes, with constant seconds at 12. The chronograph has a white central seconds contrasting with with the dark background and a 30-minute register at 6.

The revolving outer track graduated to 12 units was used to calculate the duration of the flight.

This highly decorative piece exemplifies the diversity and the quality of the military horological production.
