The Universal Genève Aero-Compax 890100/01 was a true pilot watch.
Indeed, it features an unusual 24-hour dial. Thanks to it, the pilot knew instantly if it was 1PM or 1AM, which was extremely useful during intercontinental flights.
Furthermore, it has a bi-color rotating bezel also calibrated to 24 units to display a second time zone, for example the local time of the destination.
The watch is powered by the Cal 90, based on the Valjoux 178. Interestingly, the minute register located at 3 o'clock is graduated to 15, not to 30 or 45 as usually seen. This might be because it takes 15 minutes to check a plane before taking off. On the opposite side, at 9, there are the constant seconds while the 12-hour chronograph register is at 6 o'clock.
The 890100 has robust 41mm diameter case with round chronograph pushers and screw-down back with the reference and case numbers engraved on the outside.
Rarely appearing at auction, this Aero-Compax represents an opportunity to acquire a charismatic and unusual piece from one of the most sought-after manufactures of that period.
