Description
A gold and enamel snuff box, Paul Robert, Paris, 1756
oval, all sides enamelled en plein with shaped enamel cartouches representing genre scenes, after Teniers, within chased and engraved scrollwork border formerly enamelled in translucent dark green, the sides further decorated with dividers formed of small inset enamel plaques painted with fern on a pale grey background, the base enamelled with a genre scene of a couple drinking, with a young man playing the mandolin to the left, maker’s mark, charge and discharge mark of Eloi Brichard 1756-62, Paris date letter

Gold boxes by the renowned Paris gold box maker Paul Robert (1720–1779) who had become master in 1747, can be found in the most distinguished private and museum collections in the world, such as the Metropolitan Museum in New York. To their collection belongs an oval gold and enamel snuff box dated 1758, painted with genre scenes and blue enamel borders very similar to the present lot (accession no. 17.190.1198), also illustrated in Clare Le Corbeiller, 'European and American snuff boxes 1730-1830', London, 1966, no. 87.
