A gold and enamel snuff box for the Ottoman market, possibly Jean-François Bautte, Geneva, circa 1840
rectangular with oval section, the top enamelled en plein with a flower-embellished military trophy including a crescent moon banner and a sabre, on a pale pink translucent enamel ground over engine-turning, within opaque white and pink enamel borders, on a pale lilac taille d’épargne ground decorated with fine leafy and floral scrollwork in the manner of Bautte, the hinged lid flanked by similarly decorated wavy bands, the sides centred with gold and white elongated sunflower heads on lilac ground, protruding gold thumbpiece, apparently unmarked
