Sotheby's Paris, 30 June 2004, Lot 106

Sims Reed Gallery, London

Private Collection (acquired from the above)

Thence by descent to the present owner

The present lot features two drawings by David Hockney originally created within the guest book of Lous Landès, a Parisian restaurant the artist frequently visited. The book, also signed by other notable figures including Serge Gainsbourg, Jane Birkin, Coco Chanel, and Simone de Beauvoir to name a few, was acquired at a Sotheby’s Paris auction in 2004. Hockney’s immediately recognizable line, both lively and exacting, captures the likeness of the son of restauranteur Georgette Descat on one page, and also a scene with two anonymous drinkers on the other.
