Yayoi Kusama

b. 1929

Gentuer Object (Spirit of the Bird)

signed Yayoi Kusama, dated 1988 and variously inscribed in Japanese (on the underside)

acrylic, feathers, synthetic hair, glitter and canvas collage in wooden box

15⅜ by 10¼ by 5 in.

39 by 26 by 12.7 cm.

Executed in 1988.

This work is in very good and sound condition overall. Any discoloration and textural inconsistency are inherent to the artist’s choice of medium and working method. There are scattered accretions on the surface, notably along the edges of the box. In the interior,  an accumulation of dust settled and faint soiling is visible on the surface and in the crevices. On the reverse, there is an artist’s nail hole, likely dated to the time of execution.
