Description

Netherlandish, Late 17th Century

A Half-Length Figure of a Bishop Saint

oak

41½ by 26 by 19 in.; 105.4 by 66 by 48.3cm.

The present carving can be compared to the work of the Flemish Baroque sculptor Gabriël Grupello (Geraardsbergen 1644 - Kerkrade 1730), and especially to a carving of Saint Willibrord attributed to Grupello that was executed for the Church of St. Willibrord, Merkstein. Aside from their similar dress, including their mitres, copes, and pleated tunics, both carvings share a similar downward gaze, furrowed brow, and incised eyes. However, the carved decorations on the garments of the present sculpture are more elaborate.
