A large George IV silver-gilt tea caddy, Samuel Dutton, London, 1826


Rectangular, the front and back chased and embossed with fox hunt scenes, the lid and two sides chased with grouse in pastoral settings, wood-lined interior, engraved with a crest and motto,

18cm., 7in. long

The crest and motto are those of Bentley of Birch House, near Bolton, Lancashire, for John Bentley (11 April 1797 – 4 February 1879), Justice of the Peace and Deputy Lieutenant of Lancashire and Middlesex. He was the son of John Bentley (1758-1821) of Stockport, Cheshire, and his wife, Ellen (née Lomax, 1762-1825). Mr. Bentley was married on 11 October 1826 to Emma (1813-1885), eldest daughter of Clement Royds of Mount Falinge, Rochdale. He died at his London residence, 36 Portland Place.
