A Rare English Eighteen Karat Gold and Enamel Freedom Casket, Mappin & Webb, London, 1926 


shaped rectangular raised on four claw and ball feet headed by foliage, the ends mounted with dragons holding the enameled arms of the city of London, the sides mounted with five polychrome enamel views of the city of London, including Guildhall, Tower Bridge and St. Paul’s Cathedral, and a coat of arms with crest and supporters, hinged cover applied with a chain, engraved with presentation inscription and topped by a seated figure of Britannia holding the enameled British shield next to a lion passant, marked on body and cover, lined in white satin and with wood base panel, containing the original illuminated scroll backed by red leather, 2 pieces

The inscription on the cover reads “Presented with the Freedom of the City to the Hon Walter S Monroe, Prime Minister of Newfoundland, Guildhall, 19th November, 1926”. 


Walter Stanley Monroe was born in Dublin in 1871 and died in St. Johns, Canada, 1952. He was 9th prime minister of Newfoundland 1924-28, businessman and politician, and leader of the Liberal-Conservative Progressive Party. As prime minister he abolished personal income tax and reduced corporate taxes for banks and gave voting rights to women in 1925.
