Lot Details

Description

[APOLLO 11]

FLOWN silk red, white, and blue Texas state flag. 4 by 6 inches. Inscribed in blue ink on white: "FLOWN TO THE MOON ON APOLLO XI." SIGNED BY BUZZ ALDRIN in black ink. This lot will be accompanied by a Typed Letter Signed from BUZZ ALDRIN.

Directly from the Personal Collection of Apollo 11 Lunar Module Pilot Buzz Aldrin

It was not uncommon for American astronauts to fly state flags for friends or family, or for locations that had personal significance to the astronauts. Astronauts involved in Gemini or Apollo missions would have had strong connections to the state of Texas, given Apollo Mission Control Center's location in Houston.

BUZZ ALDRIN'S provenance letter reads: "This letter certifies that this Texas state flag was flown to the Moon aboard the command module Columbia.

In July of 1969, I landed on the Moon as part of the Apollo 11 crew. To help commemorate this historic milestone, I chose to personally carry this 4 by 6 inch Texas state flag with me in my Personal Preference Kit (PPK)."
