Born in 1880, William Russell Flint first trained as a lithographer in Edinburgh and as an illustrator in London before turning almost exclusively to watercolor. Madelina is an arresting example of Flint's virtuous command of the medium.

In 1917, Flint became a member of the Royal Society of Painters in Watercolours, of which he was president from 1936 to 1956, and was elected to be a member of the Royal Academy in 1933.
