Jean Louis Forain was a successful satirist and painter of modern life in Paris. As a close friend of Edgar Degas, Forain found inspiration in many of the subjects made famous by other Impressionists including ballerinas and the fashionable crowds that paid to see them perform. Here, a single dancer is seen from behind, seemingly at rest backstage or in a rehearsal studio.
