Thence by descent to the present owner
Influenced by his encounter with Suzanne, soon to become his second wife, Metzinger introduces in his compositions elements from Greek art and mythology as exemplified in this painting representing the goddess of the sea and wife of Poséidon, Amphitrite. This composition is the small version of a painting (apart from a few minor details) that was part of the art dealer Léonce Rosenberg's collection.

Jean Metzinger influencé par la rencontre avec sa future seconde femme, Suzanne, introduit dans ses tableaux des éléments de l'art et de la mythologie grecque à l'instar de ce tableau représentant la déesse de la mer et femme de Poséidon, Amphitrite. Cette œuvre est la petite version (à quelques détails près) d'une toile ayant fait partie de la collection du marchand Léonce Rosenberg.
