Description

Paolo Giovio

Descriptiones, quotquot extant, regionum atque locorum. Basel: (Heinrich Petri and Pietro Perna), 1561

8vo (153 x 90mm.), woodcut initials, modern calf in period style with small gilt stamp of a bird on upper cover, spine gilt in compartments with red morocco lettering-piece, bibliographical notes in English on flyleaf, covers slightly discoloured

This volume contains accounts of various parts of Europe, including Britain and Russia, some of which were previously published separately. Giovio's history and description of Muscovy was partly based on a meeting with a Russian diplomat in 1525 in Rome, Dimitrii Gerasimov.
