Active in Carrara during the third quarter of the 19th century, Pietro Franchi was a significant sculptor who first studied at the Accademia di Belle Arte in Carrara, after which, in 1833, he was first recognised for his technical prowess with the work ‘Giulio Cesare s’impossessa dell’erario pubblico’. Throughout his career he copied famous works and created his own fresh compositions.
The present groups of infants are charmingly conceived and beautifully carved.
