Begegnung mit dem Wesensfremden (Encounter with the Strange Being)

signed H.H. (lower left); signed Hannah Höch on the reverse

collage on board

30 by 26cm., 11 ¾ by 10 ¼ in.

Framed: 47.5 by 43.5cm., 18 ¾ by 17 ⅛ in.

Executed circa 1956.

Dr. Ralf Burmeister of the Landesmuseum für Moderne Kunst, Fotografie und Architektur, Letung Künstler-Archive und Bibliothek has confirmed the authenticity of this work.

Collage on a thin wooden board with a paper backing sheet, into which a small title strip is tucked at the right part of the lower edge. Hinged to the overmount along the upper edge. The right edge is slightly unevenly cut and there is some minor wear to parts of the extreme edges, most prominently on the left edge. There is a small paper loss to the lower left corner, likely inherent to the artist's process. The collage elements are secure; there are several creases and minor surface inconsistencies in places, inherent to the artist's working method. This work is in overall very good condition.
