The present work is a study for Thomas Eakin's masterwork Cowboys in the Badlands from 1888. Produced upon the artist's return to Pennsylvania in 1887, the present work is among a series of oil sketches the artist executed at Crowell Farm in Avondale. It depicts details of the farm's horse stables and the head of one of the riders seen in the final composition, posed by his student Edward Boulton.
