A Kawari kabuto [unusually shaped helmet]
Edo period, 17th century
the lacquered iron bowl with the fukigaeshi [turnbacks] of stenciled Dutch leather with lotus flower and bonji, the copper-gilt fukurin finely chased and engraved with scrolling foliage, the mabisashi [peak] inlaid in silver with further foliate scrolls, the stylised eyebrows hammered, chased and engraved, the shikoro [neck guard] of four tiers with spaced lacing in blue braid and horsehair
The bowl to peak: 30 cm., 11¾ in.
The shikoro to peak: 34.5 cm., 13½ in.
