This pair of signed still lifes are fine examples of Alexander Coosemans's carefully composed compositions. Both works centre around two bunches of musty grapes, against which he has painted vibrant lemons, cherries and figs. The glistening oyster shells, smooth fig skins, dimpled lemon rind, and crusty loaf of bread all demonstrate Coosemans's skill at painting different surface textures. Alexander Coosemans was born in Antwerp and was deeply influenced by the work of Jan Davidsz. de Heem, for whom he worked as an apprentice in the early 1640s.
