Willem van Hasselt was of Dutch origin but obtained French nationality in 1933 and lived in France for most of his life. He spent much time painting landscapes near Seine-Port, Morbihan and in Burgundy, and in 1945, he was elected into the Académie des Beaux-Arts. This painting, of an unknown location, which depicts a long narrow building (a longère) typically found in the region, was almost certainly painted 'en plein air' and is appealing for its vibrant palette and informal view.
