8vo (202 x 125 mm). Appendix at end with separate pagination; lacking half-title, light and occasional spotting, marginal browning to a few leaves. Contemporary calf, covers with gilt rules, spine with raised bands in six compartments second with manuscript title, edges speckled red; rubbing to extremities with some loss, staining and soiling to covers. In custom slipcase and folding chemise.
Fourth edition. "Pownall had a distinguished career as an enlightened colonial administrator, serving as governor of several of the British American colonies. … He also gave serious consideration to the business of governing the colonies, writing the present work on his return from North America. … A moderate man with sympathy for Americans, he issued successive editions of his widely read book, with revisions through a seventh edition in 1777" (Revolutionary).
