Adolf Schreyer was born in Germany and trained at the Städelsches Kunstinstitut in Frankfurt and at the Düsseldorf Academy. He began painting landscape and military subjects and after travelling to Algeria, he become known for his Arab rider and horse depictions. In subject matter and style he was influenced by Eugène Fromentin and loose, rapid brushwork characterize his works.
